Deciding on Inpatient or Outpatient Detox in California

Drug detox and treatment centers vary depending on the type and severity of addiction, as well as the needs of the patient, and include both long-term and short-term inpatient and outpatient programs. Programs can treat general demographics and addictions while others cater to specific drug addictions, co-occurring mental or physical issues as well as to different demographics of Californians such as seniors, teenagers, men, women, pregnant women, executives, those with different sexual orientations and those with different religious beliefs. Whichever type of treatment you lean toward, it’s important that you pick the one that best fits you.

Every year, states take thorough surveys to better understand their resident’s relation to drug and alcohol abuse. According to studies published by California Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues At-A-Glance, it’s believed among all age groups that consuming more than five drinks in a sitting once or twice a week is perfectly fine, a fact that is not believed nearly as much around the rest of the country. Additionally, the total number of youth in the state that has tried or currently use an illicit substance is nearly 1% higher than the national average. This concurrently leads to the state’s higher-than-average addiction rate among adults of 7.3%, compared to the national average of 6.7%. Although overall substance use is decreasing at a rate of about 0.1%, the number of people getting treated for addiction has dropped from 138,000 in the year 2009 to only about 117,000 in 2013.

California is the best state in the nation at offering large varieties of treatment options and detox methods. Thanks to the variety and options available, all you need to do is pinpoint which is the right one for you. The best way to narrow these options down is to make a list of options you would like in your program including:

  • Inpatient or outpatient treatment
  • How heavy the emphasis on family inclusion should be
  • Quick and to the point treatment options or more thorough, elongated programs
  • Holistic treatment, or more traditional types of therapy

California’s most used substances are:

  1. Alcohol
  2. Marijuana
  3. Methamphetamine
  4. Cocaine

Although the majority of addictions in California are alcohol-related, only about 8% ever receive treatment in a given year. Every day that an addiction continues, the threat of death in their future multiplies substantially.Because treatment options are so plentiful in California, outpatient care may not be necessary. No matter what type of addiction you are suffering from, you will most likely be able to find a facility that specializes in specific addictions.
